After a bit of a week on the road, it was lovely to unpack for 7 days in our Air BNB cottage in Maine. Simple things like a few home cooked meals and playing in the yard were a welcome break to moving round for the week before. It was great to have a base to explore from and yet come back to the same place each night.
Though I think I am pretty quick at unpacking and packing it's nice not to do it every day or two. I am writing this another week later when we have been doing just that. The benefit of moving is we can explore bigger distances. The benefit of staying still is we can explore a smaller area more in depth. With so much to do in Maine our options weren't limited. We maxed ourselves in Wells and highlights included (and a great itinerary for 7 days in Maine):
On our way up from Boston we had hours of fun celebrating Halloween and exploring the massive corn maze at www.marinicornmaze.com . We also stopped off at Salem where it's witch history was very apparent with every second shop linked to the witch past. It was very popular with Sophia and Olivia.
Day One: exploring local Wells then out for an afternoon of shopping the Kittery Outlets and enjoying the summer clearance so at the very least we have replaced well used swimsuits.
Day Two: Exploring the local beach, catching up on washing and the biggest ice creams to date.
Day Three: Up the coast to explore Postland Maine, found lovely food and coffee and walked the historic waterfront. We also drove out to Cape Elizabeth to see the famous lighthouse. This was one of our few days on rain and we got our raincoats out for only the second time of the trip.
Day Four: Off to picturesque Kennebunkport where we slowly explored the beautiful old town for the morning before heading out to Cape Elizabeth and the historic, picturesque old lighthouse.
Day Five: Ogunquit was on our doorstep so made sure we spent a quiet morning walking its streets and then walking down the coast to Perkins Cove for candy and some fantastic sea views.
Day Six: After a late wake up we went into Wells for a great lunch at Donigans Donuts, a local donut diner. It was packed with locals and I discovered the decadence of dunking donuts in coffee. We worked our lunch off at a very competitive and fun game of mini golf where Sophia got a hole in one and was one point away from beating Rob.
All in all it was nice to slow down and settle in somewhere to experience a typical North American holiday town. We are also starting to get a glimpse of how big Halloween is here with most houses already getting pumpkins out and some houses already fully decked out.
